Smith's Kauai

The luau has been booked! Here is the website for the luau. We have reservations for Friday, Jauary 14th, 2011 - which is the first full day we're in Kaua'i as well as the same day as our helicopter tour.

The schedule for the luau (taken from Smith's Garden Luau website). The site also states that times are 15 minutes earlier in the off-season... so keep that in mind :)

Smith Family Garden Luau Schedule

5:00pm Welcome Join us in paradise near the sacred Wailua River, a place once reserved for Hawaiian royalty. Receive your shell lei and either take a narrated tram tour or a leisurely stroll around the lush 30-acre gardens (last tram tour departs at 5:30pm)

6:00pm Imu Ceremony Meet some of our family members and learn of the Hawaiian cooking method called Kalua — where Kalua pig is wrapped in ti leaves and cooked to perfection in our earthen imu oven.

6:15pm Cocktails & Music Have a mai tai, beer, or glass of wine at the open bar while the Smith family entertains with Hawaiian songs. (Soft drinks and juice are also available.)

6:30pm Luau Feast The music continues while you enjoy traditional flavors and island favorites like kalua pork, beef teriyaki, chicken adobo, and sweet’n’sour mahimahi. Sample our ono local specialties like lomi salmon, fresh poi, Hawaiian sweet potato, mac salad, namasu salad and scrumptious tropical deserts!

8:00pm Rhythm of Aloha Show Move to the rhythm with colorful, authentic performances from Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, Philippines, New Zealand, China and Japan in our spacious open-air, torch-lit “Pele Amphitheater” (complete with erupting volcano!).

Webcams!

This is a webcam located at the Hilton Waikola Village which is our hotel on the Big Island of Hawai'i.

And, I'm still trying to find a good one for Kaua'i... This is the best I can do so far: it's from Blue Hawaii Helicopter Tours.

New Plans for Kaua'i

Forget everything I've said about the Sheraton Kaua'i... We're now going to stay at the Grand Hyatt Kaua'i instead. Long story short, this hotel will accommodate all of our traveling party better then our previous choice. Here's the site for the new hotel, go check it out!

Personalized Views of Paradise

So I was just killing time at work looking at the website for the hotel we're staying in in Kaua'i and they have a live webcam! Apparently you get about five minutes to control the camera and then it goes to the next person in line. And, even better - you can take snap shots with it! So - enjoy!

Here's a link to the webcam if you want to play around with it!

Updates abound!

Yesterday afternoon Baba, Doug, Mom and I met with Brenda at Pyramid Travel to talk about our plans and get the ball rolling on our booking. The dates for the trip have been nailed down (January 8, 2011 - January 18, 2011) which will give us FIVE NIGHTS on each island! We've decided to go to the Big Island and (of course) stay at the Hilton Waikoloa again. Then, for the second five days - we'll be in Kaua'i. Remember - Spouting Horn, Po'ipu Beach, and all the lovely local crafts? Yup, we're going to that Kaua'i!

Prior to our meeting, we had not chosen a hotel on Kaua'i because none of us (namely Baba and I) could remember where we stayed the last time we were there! Brenda looked back in our file and it turns out we haven't been to Kaua'i since 1998! What, you remember what you were doing 13 years ago!? :) So, we asked for recommendations from Brenda, and she suggested the Sheraton Kaua'i - which looks fantastic! There are a lot of activities every day right in the hotel which I hope to check out.

Now, we're just nailing down exact flights and boring stuff like that. But, I'm starting to research Whale Watching Tours again (like this one Andrew and I went on last year) and a good luau - since we clearly won't be going to the PCC this year... 86 days to go!

Froggy Goes A-Traveling... Again!

So, yesterday afternoon I was on the phone with Baba, and he says "I was thinking of going to Hawai'i in January..." Which means... I'm going to Hawai'i again! I haven't had a real break from work or school (or wedding planning, now too!) since our trip to the Big Island and O'ahu at the begining of 2010, so this will be a much needed pause in the year's occupations, as it were.

The basic plans at this time are very loose of course - we only decided to go yesterday afterall! But, with January only about two and half months away, it's going to go very quickly! We'll probably shoot for about a 10 day trip again, this time visiting the Big Island and Kaua'i. I'm really looking forward to that part, since Kaua'i was only on our itinerary for three or four of our ten trips to the islands. Unfortunately, with Andrew's plan to take the Series 65 within the next few months and then start his own practice, he won't be able to join us, but it sounds like Baba's planning on "bringing everyone along" so it should be a fun trip!

I'll be using this blog as a vechicle for my travel writings again, so keep tuned for more updates!

poem

we entered
and left you in shadows
a land of light
clouded by night
fitting, that, denying us one last look,
you saved your memories, secrets,
for a time in the future
when light again graces your shores
sending us back into another
clouded land, white, with cold sand,
and shaded not by swaying palms
but by trees, stark now, without leaves
we remember your warmth and shiver
with the cold mid-western wind

A wet moon...

On the way down from the North Shore, we got to witness a partial
eclipse of the moon. Andrew looked it up online and the ancient people
(not sure which ones) called this type a "wet moon." It's really nifty
because the cresent is the bottom of the moon instead of the side like
what you normally see!

Day Eight - Time is Precious

Today is our second-to-last-day in paradise. I'm sitting in the business center of the hotel right now, as our "free wireless" turned "free wired" internet decided to crap out on us, this is the next best thing. At least I get to connect my own computer!

Anyway... Today was a lot of fun. This morning, we met Lita for breakfast at the Hukilau Cafe in La'ie. For those of you who've seen the movie 50 First Dates - you may recognize that name. This, however, is not THE Hukilau Cafe from the movie - what they did was borrow the name and use a different location because they wanted someplace right near the beach... Because NOTHING in Hawai'i is anywhere but RIGHT on the beach... right? :) But, regardless of Hollywood's snafu - this place was great! We all had Hawaiian Style French Toast (made with Hawaiian Sweet Bread) dusted with powdered sugar and corned beef hash. All was to die for! Andrew and I agree - it's these tiny hole-in-the-wall places (yes, even after being featured in a movie and on Man vs. Food...) that are the best!

After breakfast, we headed back to the hotel for a little bit. Capitol One Canada is filming a commercial on the property today, so the pool  was closed till 11am (and various other parts of the hotel after that), so we went right out again to Waimea Valley. Andrew and I even walked all the way to the "back" of the valley to see his first waterfall. Glad to share that with you honey! :)

For a late lunch, we finally made it to Kua 'Aina in Hale'iwa for some fantastic burgers!

When I say late - I mean around 2... so by now you can imagine, Baba wanted a bit of a rest. Andrew and I took him back to the hotel and then he and I went to the PCC again to utilize the Free-in-3 perk they have where you can come back again within three days for free and do anything you want other then the luau or the night show. They had an IMAX show about the coral reefs of Fiji that we wanted to take in.

Around 5, when we were finished at the PCC, Andrew and I came back to the hotel again. We plan to meet Baba for dinner later (hopefully MUCH later, though Baba's and Andrew's stomachs seem to empty out faster then mine...)

So, with this - I leave you: creating rainstorms is easy when you have a production budget...  I just hope they can afford an umbrella!

Day Seven - Shrimp, Corn, Pig and Pineapple Dee-lite!

Today we had a more leisurely start to the morning; we met for breakfast at the Palm Terrace at about 9. Then Baba, Andrew and I walked over to the placards detailing the events of December 7, 1941 and the ‘O’pana Mobile Radar Site.

The rest of the morning, Andrew and I spent time on the beach making sand castles and playing in the ocean.

Around 11:30, we intended to head to the Polynesian Cultural Center. Driving through Kahuku towards La’ie, we saw one of the famous Kahuku Shrimp Stands. We stopped and had some lunch, of course. Andrew had the Volcano Shrimp and I had some Kahuku Sweet Corn. Baba had his packed lunch…

After lunch, we headed to the PCC. We had booked the Ambassador Package so we had a guided tour of all 8 villages (one representing each of the main Island Nations of Polynesia). It was great being on the guided tour because it ensured we saw all the villages and all the presentations.

About 5 o’clock, our guide, Scott, dropped us off at the Hale Aloha for our Ali’i Luau. We hadn’t been to the Luau at the PCC in a long time; it was fun to see the Kaluah pig come out of the imu (underground fire pit) where it cooks for 15-25 hours.

After the Luau, we migrated over to the Pacific Theater for the 7:30 show. This was a new show for both Baba and I. Previously we’d seen Horizons: Where the Sea Meets the Sky. This year, the PCC debuted its new show called Ha: The Breathe of Life.  I liked this show a lot. It had a more cohesive story to follow, new choreography and all new costumes. It really was beautiful. Our Ambassador Package entitled us each to the Pineapple Deelite dessert at the intermission, as well.

The PCC has always been one of my favorite places to visit while in Hawai’i, and it definitely didn’t disappoint me this time! This new show was amazing and the rest was just as good as I remember it!

Day Six - Change of Plans...

I know I said yesterday that our plan for today was to go to Hale’iwa and to Waimea Valley, but we decided to save that for later in the week. So this morning, after having breakfast in the Palm Terrace (side note: YES, this is a another Hilton, so the restaurants have the same names…) we left the hotel and headed South to Honolulu with the intention of visiting the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Missouri, and the USS Bowfin. Upon arrival, we found out that both the USS Arizona Memorial and the USS Missouri are CLOSED! Apparently, the dock for the boats that take patrons out to the USS Arizona Memorial were broken and the USS Missouri was dry-docked. Hopefully, everything will be open again by Saturday, so we plan to try again.

Instead, we went shopping at Hilo Hattie’s Flagship Store  - where Baba was nice enough to purchase a beautiful ring setting for my other lavender pearl for me – and then we headed back up North.

On the way up to Kahuku, we decided to spend the afternoon at the Dole Plantation. Baba, Andrew and I took a ride on the Pineapple Express, which provides guests an audio and visual tour of the history of the plantation and the Hawaiian pineapple and sugar industries. Afterward, Andrew and I went through the World’s Largest Maze (Listed in the 2008 Guinness Book of World Records)which I’d never done before. That was a lot of fun, and made Andrew and I want to do the Corn Maze in Wisconsin next fall!

When we’d finished having our fruity fun, we continued on to the North Shore and back to the hotel. We’d planned to meet Lita for dinner so we headed down to Lei Lei’s by the golf course on the property. She brought us all beautiful leis, and her son, Reggie, came along too. Lita had recommended this restaurant and I’m really glad she did! Andrew and Baba both had Mahi Mahi, I had herb-crusted chicken breast with a garlic cream sauce, Lita had seafood scampi and Bruddah had a steak. The food was excellent and the company was even better! It was fun sitting and reminiscing about our previous trips and catching up. We have plans to meet them for breakfast on Saturday too.

Tomorrow, we are going to the Polynesian Cultural Center. We have tickets to explore all the villages they have set up there, then we’ll have dinner at the Ali’I Luau and then take in the evening show Ha: Breath of Life. I’m really looking forward to this, I hear this new evening show is really amazing!!

Mahalo for reading! Aloha!

Waikoloa Sunset

180 seconds is all it takes
For the sun to breathe the day's last breath
Sinking like lava, flows into the sea
Conch shell's call celebrates another day's end
We drink to life, and the promise of tomorrow
But already we mourn today's death

Day Five - Even Better!

Even better then "internet is included in your Aloha Passport" would be "WIFI is FREE throughout the hotel"!!!!

Even better then sitting at the computer desk in the room is sitting on my lanai, with the salty sea breeze coming in off the North Shore of O'ahu.

Even better then the last time I was here: the whole hotel has been redone. Those who may have seen the movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" will know what the "new" hotel looks like. But this is a pretty recent renovation. I believe it was finished back in 2006 or thereabouts. Prior, the hotel was still great, don't get me wrong - but it is much better now! :) Before, the interior was all dark greens and darker flowered carpet and felt very closed-in. This is due mostly to the fact that the initial intent for this hotel was a Vegas-style gambling establishment. Now, it is very light and airy and much more indicative of what I've come to expect from Hilton hotels in the Islands.

All in all - even better then spending the last week at Hilton Waikoloa is being able to spend ANOTHER week here! :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our flight left the Big Island at about 10 this morning and after a half-hour flight, we arrived in Honolulu. We picked up our car, another Dodge Charger, and started the trek up to the North Shore. I say trek, because where on the last island the hotel and the airport were about 20 miles apart - here there's about an hour's drive from the Southern part of the island (where Honolulu is located) to the North Shore, where Turtle Bay is in the town of Kahuku. When we got here, Andrew's and my room wasn't ready yet (Baba's was) so we dumped everything and headed for lunch at the Hang Ten Bar and Grill. Afterwards, Baba wanted to rest for awhile (more on THAT later :) ) so Andrew and I decided to explore the beach a bit. Baba, the liar, actually also went exploring on the property... he must have been sick of us! Just kidding...
Tomorrow, I hope to visit Waimea Valley, and maybe Hale'iwa too. Tomorrow, we also plan on getting together with Lita, a friend of ours from way back. More on that later!
Aloha!
TSA in Kona
The Kona TSA is on top of their game! But this means that poor Baba
has to buy more toothpaste when we get to O'ahu...
Day Four - Last Day on the Big Island
Today was our last day at the Hilton Waikoloa on the Big Island of Hawai'i.
We began our day much as the other days of this trip with breakfast at the Big Island Breakfast Buffet at the Waters Edge Ballroom.
After that, we collected the car and drove down to the petroglyph fields on the hotel property. There are a lot of petroglyphs visible from the "King's Path" near the golf course and shopping area on Waikoloa Beach Drive. Andrew and I (and Baba) drove down and parked near the King's Shops. There was a foot path to the petroglyph field, but Baba decided not to walk that and headed back to the General Store in the King's Shops. This was probably a good idea as the path was treacherous even for US to walk, I cannot imagine him having much luck.
But anyway... Andrew and I walked about half a mile along the path that the ancient Hawaiians had built and used in the 1400's, which is pretty amazing! There are hundreds of petroglyphs along this path and once you know what you're looking for, they're very easy to find. The engineers of the hotel property did a great job leaving this area untouched and natural. Along the way, some newer additions have been made... ahem... This was really horrible to see, but I can imagine it would be close to impossible to completely protect against it without either making the area inaccessible or having someone there 24/7 watching the area. It is, in effect, a natural outdoor museum though - like some many things one can find in national parks et cetera, so one would think that it would not be impossible to protect against vandals...
But I digress... Andrew and I agreed - these were pretty amazing and we're really glad we took the time to go see them.
We took some time to explore the King's Shops after having our fill of history, then left the hotel property for our last "assignment" for this island.
The last time the Montross family came to the islands was a short five months after my grandmother passed away. When I was younger, my grandparents and I would visit Hawaii for two weeks every summer and the trip prior to this one was the first my grandfather had made since our trips with my grandmother. It was obviously a special trip for him, and allowed him some closure and time to reminisce on all the great memories he had here with his wife.
There's a tradition here of taking white rocks and coral found on the beaches and using it to write messages or draw pictures on the dark lava rock that covers much of the island. The last time he was here, my grandfather (with help from my Aunt, Uncle and Dad) wrote out my grandmother's initials with these white coral pieces.
Today,  we found the spot where my grandmother's initials are written - still untouched after a year and a half. I really didn't expect them to be altered - it seems as though both locals and tourists respect these monuments to other folk's loved ones or memories pretty well and I've seen some with dates going back 20 years or more.
This afternoon, I went down to the Lagoon and laid out in the sun for a while, then Baba, Andrew and I played a round of put-put golf at the Seaside Putting Course before dinner.
I made reservations for the three of us at the Kamuela Provision Company near the Lagoon Tower in our hotel. We were there for the famous 180-second sunset, though it was a bit more cloudy tonight. There were about half a dozen whales in the vicinity providing entertainment as well. There is nothing more beautiful then waves crashing on the shore, a gorgeous sunset, and those gentle giants spy-hopping and breaching in the background.
For dinner, Baba and Andrew both had fresh-caught fish and I had a Maui Onion encrusted chicken breast with a fantastic mustard sauce and sweet potato hash. For desert - we all had ice cream.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As I mentioned, this is our last night in Waikoloa. Our flight to O'ahu is tomorrow morning at about 10. I don't think we'll have internet access as readily on the next island, so my posts probably won't be as frequent. I do plan on writing every day though, I just may have to post them all together.

Aloha Oe - Until we meet again! :)

Day Three - WHALES!

This morning, we got up around 7:30 and headed to the Big Island Breakfast at the Waters Edge Ballroom again.

The most important even today was obviously our Whale Watching Tour. Here's a little background on humpback whales in Hawaii.

Andrew and I were due at the Marina at 10:50 am, so he and I called for the car and left the hotel around 10. It took about 40 minutes to get to the Marina, is between the airport and the Kailua-Kona area. We were told to watch for the van with the 12-foot whale model on top - so you can imagine we had no problem finding our tour!

After checking in, we boarded our tour boat. We booked with Capt. Dan McSweeney's Whale Adventures which came highly recommended from just about every source we had, and with VERY good cause. Our tour was narrated by Capt. Dan himself who has a wealth of knowledge and decades of experience with whale research. To start the trip, both Capt. Dan and the other two crew members gave background information and told us "what we were seeing" which was great to folks like us who'd never seen whales.

After about 20 or 30 minutes, we came to an area where the earlier trip had seen whales, and waited to see if they were still there. All the passengers were told to keep an eye out and to scan the water for spouts, and eventually someone on the starboard side saw one. After being reminded to not all shift to that side of the boat lest we tip (!), Capt. Dan said he thought there were about 8 whales in our immediate area. For the next hour, those whales treated us to more spouting, a lot of tail slapping, round outs, spy hopping and breaching.

This was truly one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I was amazed at how close these wonderful creatures came to our boat, how playful they were and how it seemed as though the whales not only wanted us to see them - they wanted us to learn from them and to share in their journey. The tour we took with Capt. Dan's company was perfect and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants a great experience like ours! I am so glad I had this experience and I would repeat it any time!

1.10.2010

Day Two - Paniolo Country

Today we got up around 7 and had our breakfast at the Waters Edge Ballroom on the Aloha passport again. Afterward, we visited the towns of Waimea and Kamuela, Hawaii.

These towns are practically on top of each other about a half hour inland from the Hilton Waikoloa. Kamuela is the site of the historical Parker Ranch which is still a working cattle ranch. Paniolos, or Hawaiian Cowboys, were actually the "original cowboys" predating the "Wild West" of the mainland. This ranch has beef cows and is situated on the hills of Waimea and Kamuela.

The town of Waimea  is also home to a bunch of galleries and wonderful local-craft stores. We hit up a few stores and bought a lot of beautiful things to add to, well - MY,  house :)

We ate lunch at the Paniolo Country Inn which serves locally-grown beef hamburgers and wonderful fresh caught fish. This restaurant was one we frequented on our previous trips, and it was still great! I had a cheese burger, and Andrew had a Mahi Mahi fish sandwich and Baba had a burger as well. Even the ranch dressing was home-made! :)

After lunch, we headed back to the hotel. Baba wanted to watch the Packer game - which I won't go into details on, I'm sure those of you who care have already heard the bad news... and Andrew and I went to the Lagoon again to play more water sports. We rented a two person kayak again and had a lovely hour rowing around the Lagoon. Andrew did most of the rowing... :) We saw another Green Sea Turtle, a lot of Malolo, and even an eel. After seeing the eel, I kept my hands and feet inside the kayak at all times, but all in all it was an enjoyable afternoon.

For dinner this evening, Andrew and I ate at the Boat Landing Pavilion which is right in our tower. Good food and free Mai Tais (with the Aloha Passport) cannot be beat!

Now, it is time to pack our day-trip bag for tomorrow we WHALE WATCH!!! I am really looking forward to this, as I've never seen a whale and I cannot let C.T.  and the crew of the Mimi have all the fun! :) (If you need help with that great reference, let me know :) )

Aloha!

First Day in Paradise

Well, we finally made it! :) We got to our hotel pretty late last night, so our first real chance to get anything done was today.

Part of the package we're on gave us breakfast every day, so that's where we started this morning. Breakfast is served buffet style at the Water's Edge Ballroom (while the Palm Terrace is being renovated) so we do have a short tram or boat ride to get there.

After breakfast, we went into Kailua Kona for a bit of shopping. We ended up at Hilo Hattie's of course! :) I decided to do the "pick a pearl" again and Andrew picked my oyster for me. Good job letting him too - since he picked one with TWO rare lavender pearls inside!!! I had intended to make a ring since I already have made two necklaces, but with the beauty of this lavender pearl, I picked a new modern styled setting for another necklace. I decided to just hold on to the other pearl for the time being, perhaps I'll place that in a ring setting anyway. I can do that either with Maui Divers (the company that is in Hilo Hattie) or I could go to a local jeweler in Madison. Of course, I will probably just end up doing it either here or in O'ahu because that's how I am :)

After our fruitful shopping trip, we came back to the hotel and had sandwiches for lunch at the Orchid Marketplace (formally the Orchid Cafe).

Baba decided to take it easy this afternoon, so Andrew and I partook in our Aloha Passport which allow us half-off at the water sports lagoon. We rented a two person kayak and had a blast! The lagoon is fed by the ocean and has fish and wildlife in it. We even saw a Green Sea Turtle!! There were also Malolo, which are a version of flying fish, and many others.

We walked around the whole property and swam in a few pools and sat in the hot tub as well before coming back to the room. Watching the sunset on the lanai was fantastic and now we're contemplating dinner.

This has been a fantastic day and I'm totally looking forward to tomorrow! Planning a trip to Waimea and the Parker Ranch most likely.

More posts from paradise later!
